It's weird how every FP story that mentions Honda, automatically has rants in the comments section about how they're shitty...
You might not be happy with how Honda hasn't turbo'ed the civic, or the styling and whatnot maybe sub-par, but anyone who knows the K series, understands the greatness of the SI is the engine. I get that there's more to a car than the engine, but what's the point of such a negative post that you only list cons of a car? Honda's shifters are more direct than any shifter of its competitors ever since the DC2 GSR. If you want to turbo, theres plenty of options, stock K20a2/z3 can handle 300whp with boost, on stock internals. You get to rev to the moon, and returns acceptable gas mileage. If you want 40mpg go buy a hybrid. Nowhere am I saying is the Civic SI the best car ever, it has its downfalls, but in its class it really isn't the worst.
Although I would avoid the 9th gen Civics since they kinda screwed the engine a little. K24s are great, especially the torque but the engines are limited mods wise. Also every hate-filled rant about Civics just make me think that they've lost a race to a k swapped rusted out EG hatch lol
TLDR- K series is the best engine ever.

Honda is like that restaurant who has some amazing appetizers and pretty good drinks, but for the life of them they can't make a decent meal, the atmosphere sucks and the waiters are rude.
Its as if the food is bland and overpriced, but you can't help but want to come back to the hot wings .
Maybe then you first went to the restaurant it was really good, maybe you had an awesome experience, but that was a long time ago and they must have either switched management or something. Either way, you love those appetizers, but at the end of every meal you feel disappointed when you look at the bill.

Also, you have to realize that for most people, the engine is really only 10% of the total car. (for me, it's like 50%) So a great engine cannot redeem an otherwise lackluster car.

Car enthusiasts are really bitchy people. I will bet a decent sum of money that Honda could continue selling their entire 1995 lineup and people will find something new to bitch about every day. Oh, it's too loud, there's no power seats, there's no (insert absurdly specific feature).
I say that because that's been happening for ages. Dig up a 1991 issue of Car and Driver , and turn to the Letters to the Editor section. You'll see people raising hell about the 4th gen Accord (one of the best) turning into their father's Oldsmobile. Hell, even Road and Track found themselves wondering if the EK Civic really was the "end" of the Civic as we knew it.

I love me some Honda shifter feel. Also, saying someone's dislike for Hondas stems from them losing a street race to one, and that the K series is the "best engine ever" is one of the reasons people dislike Hondas. I have friends who love and work on Hondas, but can no longer stand hanging out with other "Honda kids". I looked at an Si when i was shopping around, but for the same money you can get a lot more ponies, and much more interesting cars from the likes of Subaru, Mazda, Ford... No one can touch the feel of Honda transmissions though. Even the old ones feel ten times better than anything else out there.

B-series is best engine ever, though I may be a little biased (previous '99 si owner)
But I agree with everything else you say, there is a disproportionate amount of hate

now, if only b-series engines got the range of transmissions the k-series got, man I'd love a 6th gear

eh, front pagers are gonna front page, whatcha gonna do?

The K series part was really a poor attempt to make a joke that would relieve my post of being so serious over something kinda dumb... But yeah "Honda Kids" are pretty annoying, luckily the people I know that are into Hondas are really chill people who just enjoy them for the build quality, reliability, and potential. And yeah Honda is behind in the HP wars, supposedly next gen of Honda engines are going to be turbo so there's that.

6th gear in the RSX-S and even the S2000 isn't the best, still turning around 3000rpm at highway speeds.

I got a K20a2 myself!

Yeah you can't go halfway down without a VTEC joke. Personally VTEC isn't that big part of a component for my love of Hondas. Maybe because I haven't owned a B series yet.

certainly the sudden on/off of the VTEC in pre-k-series days is far more dramatic than the intelligent VTEC of modern times. There is something truly addictive to the intense change in sound I get at 5200 RPM all the way out to 8200, especially with a very generous intake and straight pipe exhaust.

huh, interesting. Pictured is my car from a previous day dreaming of a 6th gear. I'm told I can swap in a taller 5th gear from the Integra LS, one day perhaps.
have drive an RSX, but not the S, and have driven an S2K but not to the extent that I was permitted into 6th gear. Some day, some day.

I've heard nothing but great things about people who swapped their 5th gear with a LS in their GSR. I forgot, is yours a B16 or B18?
Difference between base and Type S is night and day, also base came with a 5 speed I think. The weird thing about 6th gear is I find myself using it a lot in city driving, mostly because sometimes I'm not in the mood for the loud intake lol The 6 speeds in the S2k and RSX-S are really similar.

My friend builds Honda dragsters and just turbos them himself. He hates new Hondas. His drag car is a 700+ hp 89 hatchback Civic. He only buys and drives old Hondas.

That's pretty badass and I can understand Honda guys that're into old ones especially like the EFs, that don't like the newer ones. They're stuck in the golden age of Honda that was like 88 to 01. Newer ones may not look better or much but K series is really much better than B series. But any engine is good if it can handle 700hp.

That's exactly how he is. It's pretty amazing seeing that much hp out of an engine that was originally designed to get the kids to school on a budget.

He doesn't have a swap in it?

Don't know what shifter my '91 CRX Si had, but it was very tight and direct, and a great match for the engine.
